brit rockAll of the previously mentioned genres of Brit rock have contributed to the style and sound of today’s modern music scene. The most dramatic success was that of Brit pop which exploded onto the British music scene in the mid 1990’s. British rock bands emerged such as Oasis, Blur and Pulp all of whom were strongly influenced by the rock, punk and progressive sounds of earlier years. Oasis was the most successful of these bands and led the way in influencing later bands to emerge on the scene. The sound developed to be more emotional and bands like Coldplay and Travis in the late 90’s. This Brit rock of the 90’s proved a turning point for the rock culture in the UK however despite huge success very few of the big names continued through to success in the new millennium.

Today the Brit rock scene has adopted an alternative rock and punk style all of its own with bands crashing into the charts and having great success, examples of this style include Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and the Arctic Monkeys.  The Arctic Monkey were new to the scene and their first album became the fastest selling album in history. Rock and pop in todays music have become merged in the UK with variations in sound to include ‘emo’ and ‘indie’ rock cultures. The popularity of the Brit rock sound shows no sign of slowing and, in comparison to popular music in other countries around the world, dominates the British marketplace today and is sure to have continued dominance in the future.
