psychedelic rockPsychedelic Brit rock appeared in the music scene in the UK in the mid 1960’s and had a certain sound style that was intended to replicate the effects of hallucinogenic drugs. This was achieved using different bizarre sounds of vocals and instruments combined with electronic effects. One of the first psychedelic hits on the Brit rock scene was in 1966 by Bob Dylan and in the year that followed many bands progressed to adopt this sound. The Beatles released Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has become famed for it’s psychedelic references such as ‘Lucy in the sky with Diamonds’ and ‘strawberry fields forever’. Other bands highly that were highly influenced were Pink Floyd and The Stones also brought in references with their song ‘19th nervous breakdown’.

Progressive rock was to follow on in the late 1960’s till the early 1970’s. The style was to challenge traditional rock composition boundaries and alter the traditional verse-chorus song structure. Bands such as Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd were all considered to be progressive Brit rock and the style enjoyed success from the late 70’s till the early 80’s where it then fell out of favor to be replaced with Punk rock.
